Launch SmartFTP by double clicking the icon on your desktop.
The first time you start SmartFTP, the settings dialog box will
pop up, prompting you to enter some basic configuration information.
The first tab that will be selected is the "General" tab. Enter
your email address.
If you always download SHN files to the same place on your hard drive, it might
be a good idea to specify the "Default Download Path" (this tells SmartFTP where
you usually download files to on your hard drive). Click on the folder icon to the right
of the "Default Download Path" box. Now select the location on your hard drive where
you want SmartFTP to download SHN files to. If you are confused by this option, you can
leave it blank and continue.
The rest of the options under the "General" tab should be all set.
Next, click on the "Connection" tab.
Increase the "Max Retries" value to 50. This is how many times
SmartFTP will try and connect you to an FTP server, if you are unable to connect
on your first try (for example, if the server is full).
Increase the "Retry Delay" value to 120. This is the delay between
connection attempts, in seconds. This means 120 is equal to one retry every 120 seconds.
Any value below 120 may get you banned from some etree.org FTP servers.
The "Client Timeout" and "Transfer Speed"
values do not need to be changed.
Uncheck the "Keep Alive" and "Retrieve Index Files" options.
Now, click on the "Queue" tab.
Set the "Number of threads" to 5.
Set the "Max threads per site to 1.
Set the "Max retries on error" to 50.
Note:There are many additional advanced options that are not required to be
configured, and are beyond the scope of this web page. These settings are
covered in the Official SmartFTP Documentation Page,
and are suggested only for experienced users.
Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the SmartFTP settings
window to begin the program. Next time you begin SmartFTP, it will launch
the program, and will bypass the Settings. To configure SmartFTP in the future,
select "Tools > Settings" in SmartFTP.
